Tar Wars

Mizzou FMIG once again participated in the national AAFP Tar Wars program in 2012.  On Nov 8-9, FMIG members went to 3rd-5th grade classrooms in the Columbia, MO area to educate students on the dangers of tobacco use.  Students take part in activities that highlight the adverse effects of cigarettes and chewing tobacco, and they also have the opportunity to participate in a national poster contest that encourages being "smoke-free".

If you are interested in activities like Tar Wars, volunteer for our "Ready, Set, Fit!" activity encouraging physical fitness in kids, coming up Spring 2013!  Contact Andrea Schuster @ ams8t7@mail.missouri.edu if you would like to participate.

Primary Care Week 2012

During Primary Care Week 2012 (October 22-26), FMIG teamed up with multiple other student interest groups to hold events that highlighted the role of primary care in medicine.  Events included:

-Stroke prevention and rehabilitation lecture by Dr. Burris, in collaboration with Geriatrics Interest Group
-Med-Peds physician panel
-FMIG Splinting and Casting Workshop, instructed by Dr. Jack Wells -- Dr .Wells demonstrated splinting/casting techniques, and then students practiced patching each other up:)

-FMIG Dinner Forum: "Mythbusters- Family Medicine" -- Our panel of family physicians spoke about some of the myths surrounding family medicine, and led round table discussions with students over dinner at Reynold's Alumni Center.

Thanks to everyone for all your hard work putting together these Primary Care Week events, and we're looking forward to doing it again next year!!
