OBGYN Workshop

On April 2, FMIG held an interactive workshop to highlight the variety of procedures a family physician can do in the OBGYN field.  MU family physicians Amanda Allmon and Amanda Swenson came and shared their expertise!  We practiced IUD insertion on pelvic models, and learned how to repair perineal lacerations by suturing on beef tongues.  We raised a few eyebrows up in the SIM center, but we definitely learned a lot :)

Be on the lookout for more sweet FMIG workshops next year!!

Ready, Set, Fit!

For the first time, our FMIG chapter implemented the Ready, Set, Fit! national AAFP initiative to encourage physical fitness in elementary students.  On April 5, 2013 eight awesome M1 volunteers ran sessions in four different 3rd grade classrooms, teaching the students about the benefits of living an active life and ways to be healthy.  The kids LOVED it, and the med students had a great time too:)

For information about volunteering for Ready, Set, Fit next year, email Lindsey Bauer or Emily Milford, our new community outreach chairs!

Tar Wars

Mizzou FMIG once again participated in the national AAFP Tar Wars program in 2012.  On Nov 8-9, FMIG members went to 3rd-5th grade classrooms in the Columbia, MO area to educate students on the dangers of tobacco use.  Students take part in activities that highlight the adverse effects of cigarettes and chewing tobacco, and they also have the opportunity to participate in a national poster contest that encourages being "smoke-free".

If you are interested in activities like Tar Wars, volunteer for our "Ready, Set, Fit!" activity encouraging physical fitness in kids, coming up Spring 2013!  Contact Andrea Schuster @ ams8t7@mail.missouri.edu if you would like to participate.
